Manchester from fashion-forward high street brands and boutiques to a tempting range of restaurants and cafes, Manchester is the perfect venue for shoppers with taste. Manchester used to be known as ‘Cottonopolis’. The black smoke which coated the city during its nineteenth-century manufacturing heyday fanned from its many garment factories and cotton mills. It became the epicentre of the music and fashion scenes, birthing the “Madchester” look created from second-hand finds from the indoor market, Affleck’s Palace. Joe Bloggs jeans, oversized T-shirts and trainers set off a casual style revolution, bringing attention and, with it, money to the city. As wealth went up, the luxury stores moved in, targeting the tabloid-friendly WAGs and their dedicated fashion followers.
Manchester style today falls into two camps: the hipsters of the Northern Quarter, descendants of the Hacienda and Brit-pop looks, and the smarter, glamorous crowd in high heels and designer handbags.
